  • Ellie Fritz at her studio in San Rafael, California.Contact: elliefritz@yahoo.comWebsite: www.elliefritz.comArtist’s StatementMy work is a hybrid of drawing, painting and printmaking processes. The abstract compositions combine charcoal, dry pigment and various printmaking techniques, as well as spray paint. These works evolve through processes of physical interactions working with two extremes: the weight of impression and the levity of erasure. I am interested in exploring and pushing the boundaries of unexpected materials in my work. Recently I have begun exploring the use of mundane utilitarian building materials. Dry pigment made from collected incense ash provides the tiniest hint of color to interact with formal elements at play. These simple compositions rely on the tension between positive and negative space. My interest in paper as the main support has developed as I have explored both its possibilities and its limitations. The ways in which paper responds to materials such as paint and charcoal allows for a sensibility of improvisation and blurs the boundaries between strength and vulnerability.BioEllie Fritz produces large-scale works on paper and panel that combine various printmaking techniques with painting and drawing. She has exhibited her work at Sardine, Brooklyn, New York; and the Vulcan Materials Gallery, Birmingham, Alabama; as well as the Diego Rivera and Swell Galleries at the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI), Mission Art Center, Herbst Pavilion, and Art Explosion, in San Francisco, California. Fritz completed both her BFA (2004) and MFA (2008) at SFAI and has received several honors, including the Spring Show Award (2004), and a Teaching Assistantship (2008), both at SFAI. In 2008, Fritz was an artist-in-residence at KALA Art Institute. She was featured in Studio Visit Magazine in 2010. She has taught through extension programs in San Francisco, including ACE at the San Francisco Art Institute. Fritz lives and works in Marin County, California.
